Things I never did

I never filled the cup of quiet,

Never drained the tub of dread,

Never failed to pay my fear,

I never saw the chance instead.

I never dreamed of feasting on

The round and wondrous moon at night,

I never thought to build the walls

To keep me safe from burning light.

I never did the things I will,

I never willed the things I did.

A firm inaction was my bond,

Surrender was my highest bid.

But then the rains that never came,

The judgements that I never heard

Persuaded me, or maybe failed;

I slowly turned and kept my word.
